The Friendly Narwhal cake by Kelsey Horvath

Description

I invited a friend over to help me make the cake. We made the cake from a marbled yellow and fudge cake mix that we baked in a bread pan. When the cake was done cooking and cooled, we carved it into a narwhal shape minus the tail which we then made out of gum paste. We then iced the cake and covered it with white fondant. Then we heated some sugar to make the horn and the waves around the narwhal. We tried to make the creatures on the narwhal’s horn out of gum paste, but it got too heavy and wouldn’t stay on the horn, so we tried using our extra fondant and that worked a lot better. Next, we painted the narwhal and the creatures and the hearts we made out of fondant with food dye. Then we assembled the cake and got our friends to check it out. Our friends then helped us eat the delicious cake and everyone became slightly addicted to the taste of fondant. The whole cake took us about three and a half hours to make.
