I'm Like a Bird! cake by Rosanna Hall

Description

I thought this design was really cute and would be good to try making a chocolate chili cake. The African theme and strong red seemed to lend itself to that kind of cake. I made if for my mum and dad's 23rd wedding anniversary.

I used chili peppers grown by my dad to make the chili paste to add to the chocolate sponge batter. It took FOREVER to crush up the chilis and my hands were stinging for the rest of the night, I just couldn't wash it all out from under my nails!!

I made just one layer of cake and covered it with chocolate butter cream before covering with red fondant icing. I used the leftover yellow icing from my other entry to make the giraffe simply by cutting around a print out of the design and painting on melted chocolate. The trees and wildlife in the background were done by painting directly onto the icing with melted chocolate. The birds were made in the same way as the giraffe by cutting them out of white icing. The details for the birds and giraffe were done using watered down gel food colourings and painting onto the icing.

The cake probably ended up taking an hour just to prepare (damn chilis!) and an hour to cook. The decoration should have only taken a few hours, but I kept taking breaks and procrastinating so I can't give a definite time!

I'll make my parents a more anniversary-type cake next year, I'll start looking through the designs again now XD
