Space Needs Color cake by Aja Green

Description

Yaaay! Ladies night..or day..it was more of a ladies day! We ditched the men folk and baked a cake! With the deadline looming near and the need to get together we decided to have a Threadcakes par-tay! (raising the roof with my hands)
We decided on Space Needs Color because it's so darn pretty and because we only had one day and it seemed the most reasonable.
We all pitched in and baked a chocolate cake with vanilla buttercream. While we waited for it to bake and cool we sketched out roughly the size of the paint tubes and the shuttle and each started playing with the fondant to make different parts. We covered the board in fondant and painted it black then added a white layer of fondant on top and painted it colorful!
When the cakes we're ready we layered it, carved it, iced it and dropped the paint tube part in the fridge...
Then we re-iced it and then dropped the shuttle part in the fridge (its a tricky fridge!) Then that part got re-iced and some of us (namely one very tired new mommy) decided to take a nap. The rest of us covered both parts in fondant and painted them. Then we stacked the shuttle onto the paints and VOILA!! A masterpiece is born!
Pictures were taken, the cake was eaten, tummy's were happy. Ladies night was a hit!
What we learned:
1. Always have a rolling pin! - wine bottles work but hurt your wrists after awhile
2. If you take out a glass shelf in the fridge to put in a oversized pot, be sure to replace said shelf after pot is taken out, so as not to confuse your friends with what appeared to be a REALLY clean shelf
3. Waiting for a cake to cool is the perfect escape time for new mommy's to take naps
and 4. Baking is ALWAYS a good reason to get the girls together!
Thanks Threadcakes!
