Wow, this was quite a project. I tried to convince my Mom that while I was home for a week in-between my summer job and going back to college, we should pick a design and make a cake. She said yeah, yeah but when I told her to pick a design, YIKES!!! It only took her about two weeks to make a decision (with a little help from me nagging her). She narrowed it down to about 8 cakes and then I picked the final one. Looking back, we probably should have started MUCH EARLIER and done more than one cake. It was definitely a good experience.
The cake flavors were banana, vanilla and chocolate. I mixed and matched the layers. I used Wilton buttercream from a tub (to save time) but realized it was way too STIFF so we made a batch of Meringue Buttercream! That helped make covering much easier. Mom baked the cake layers in two nights. She works so can only bake at night! We ended up making two half sheet cakes for the actual bottom of the mouse trap and then two 6” layers, two 10” layers and one 12” layer for the sculpting part of the cake
Mom is good at wood effect so I left that part up to her. I took on the rest of the cake. I enjoy sculpting so it was a fun cake for me. I learned how to make the sneakers with a bit of practice but to be honest, it took almost four hours to finish them since I’ve never done them before and am actually fairly new to the cake decorating world.
We started the cake on a Wednesday evening but didn’t finish until Monday afternoon (talk about tight deadlines). Mom had to bring my younger brother to college for the weekend so I was on my own! I accomplished a lot but we were definitely under the wire at the end! I think we work much better under pressure. I managed to cover the head, body, ears, feet and arms/hands and make the sneakers, water bottle and cheese before she came back on Monday. She was really impressed with what I had done. We left airbrushing all of the mouse parts for her return on Monday. It was hard because we were putting things together still wet, YIKES!
The cake ingredients included (besides actual cake), fondant, gum paste and rice crispy treats. I wanted to make sure it was as edible as possible. We used royal icing to “glue” the pieces together except for the ears where we had to add a little more support and used lollipop sticks.
I have to admit the most difficult part of the cake was cutting it. I always hate that part but I know it’s the main part of decorating a cake. After all, why go to all the work if no one will eat it! We are going to share it with all our neighbors!
I think we make a good team and we both enjoy working on cakes together. What a great idea you had with the contest. You can truly let your creative side go wild!
