Loch Ness Imposter cake by Sheri Chapp

Description

Ok, so I know my cake isn't the prettiest on this site. This was my very first effort to ever decorate a cake of any kind. It was also my first time ever working with fondant. I'm mainly posting this as affirmation to those people, like me, who see all the cool cakes and see a number of entries where people claim to have never decorated a cake before yet their cakes turn out surprisingly well and think "well this can't be THAT hard, then".

I thought it all out in my head, and the Loch Ness Imposter seemed pretty simple. All I had to do was make some fondant, color it, cut out my pictures, stick it on a frosted cake, right? riiiight.

I had decided to use marshmallow fondant, because it sounded tastier then the normal stuff that uses flour. What didn't occur to me is that the marshmallow might make it a bit...sticky. Or stretchy. So my simple plan of cutting shapes out and sticking them on the cake became a nightmare of stretchy fondant not cutting, and the whole shape distorting as I tried to pick it up and place it.

However I am pretty pleased that I at least got about the right colors with my food coloring. And I think if I had used normal fondant, that maybe it would have worked out more like I thought it would in my head.

As for the rest of the cake, the cake was a "better than basic" vanilla white cake that I made, and the frosting was buttercream, also hand made.

It at least tasted delicious!
