Description
I chose this design because it reminds me of Katamari (video game). I spent 7 hours on this today and about another 4-5 hours on prep.
The cake required a lot of planning. I had to think how to make cakes with pointy bottoms and how to support them. I knew I didn’t want to carve any cake because it would risk it breaking under its weight. I ended up using mixing bowls and a measuring cup with flat bottoms to cook the cake in, and then created a pointy front using cereal treats. I originally planned to have each cake sit on a cake plate of some sort with the pointy bit hanging over the front. I had a last minute thought to make pillars from cereal treats coated in chocolate as my bases.
Almost all the accessories (trees, clouds, houses) are made from modeling chocolate. My first batch of white modeling chocolate was terrible so I made the icey planet accessories with fondant. The water is all tinted white chocolate. The cake is covered with white fondant and then painted with food colouring. The only non-food is the toothpick trunks on the little round trees and a few skewers to hold the cake to the bases.
What worked and what didn’t: the dark chocolate modeling chocolate was awesome! It rolls so thin and smooth and will do whatever you want. The white chocolate sucked. If I ever need it again I’ll try to find some to buy rather than make it. Painting the fondant was also terrible, even using alcohol with the colour, every time I touched the outside of the cake I got black goo all over myself!
I definitely need a few days off before trying another one!!
