So this is my second Threadcakes entry, and I have been looking forward to Threadcakes 2011 all year! Since my last entry,"A Vehicle Built For Dreams", I turned 18 and graduated high school, and had the chance to work on some pretty awesome cakes which allowed me to develop my decorating skills. I chose this design because I knew it'd be a challenge, and I knew I didn't want to do something just because it'd be easy. I cut the shapes out of print-outs of the design, used an exacto knife to cut the designs out of fondant, and then used a tiny sewing needle to prick holes into the fondant along the lines of the design. Once that painstaking work was done, I had the pleasure of peeling back the paper and trying to decyper the hundreds of tiny holes. It was extremely difficult and I definitely had to take frequent breaks to stop myself from going insane! I used the smallest brush I own to paint gel food colouring mixed with vodka on the fondant and then when everything was painted and dried I assembled the cake. I baked a chocolate zucchini cake which I had been dying to try, covered it with chocolate frosting and Duff's buttercream fondant (which is a gazillion times tastier and more vibrant than Wilton!) The cake was delicious (I hate zucchini and I was glad you couldn't taste it at all)and I was very happy with how it turned out visually. Overall I must've spent at least 20-40 hours on this cake over the course of two weeks but it was well worth it!
