A Vehicle Built for Dreams cake by Sarah Woodward

Description

Hi, I'm Sarah! I'm 17 and I'm going to be a senior in high school! :)
One of my favourite things to do is bake and decorate cupcakes for my friends' birthdays and for holidays. I had never tried to decorate a cake up until now.
I started the process on Tuesday, begining with the fondant decorations. I traced the image into 4 pieces, and then cut them out with an exacto knife. Next I rolled out some fondant and cut around the stencils. Then, I began to cut away at the stencils a bit more so that I could start marking the details lightly with the exacto knife on the fondant. Once Everything was etched into the fondant I began painting them with a mixture of water and food colouring (both gel and liquid.)
Once everything was painted I had to figure out a way to do the white design on the sails. This was looming in the back of my mind since I began! I started by painting the red/orange/yellow and then first tried to just etch into it, but that didn't work. Then I decided on just piping it(and probably redid it a dozen times), but my piping skills are not very developed yet and the sails were tiny, so it didn't quite come out how I had hoped.
Once all the pieces were done (late Thursday night) I started working on the cake early Friday morning.
I didn't have time to bake a cake from scratch, so I used a box mix but used buttercream instead of water, an extra egg, and some chocolate chips to make it tastier. I then covered this with chocolate butter cream (regretably from a can) and then my layer of fondant. This was the first time I've ever covered a cake with fondant and it was definitely harder than I expected!
Once that craziness was over I free-handed the background on the cake, made little fondant stars, and layered my fondant decorations.
I had so much fun with this cake and I ended up bringing it to my friend's house where we ate it and watched a movie which was a great way to end a stressful week. All I can say is that I'm glad this contest was during the summer otherwise I wouldn't have been able to concentrate on schoolwork! :)
