Description
I spent days trying to decide which design to pick for a 3-D entry. As Day Is Swallowed Up By Night kept popping up. It already looked like a cake to me, so I picked it. It took me about 18 hours over the course of two nights. I baked yellow cakes in 9 inch round, 6 inch round, and half ball cake pans. The cake is layered with and covered in cream cheese frosting. I was running out of white fondant so the blue and green colors are a mix of fondant, modeling chocolate and food coloring. I started with carving Day with a flat surface in the back that Night could sit on. I covered it and the base in fondant/modeling choc. The people, mountains, faces and other details are made of fondant. I painted the clouds and parts of the sun with edible food coloring. Night was harder to carve since he wanted to fall over. I covered him in black fondant and sat him on Day. It took a few dowels to keep him in place. Day's arms are cake covered in fondant and Night's are pure fondant with dowels to keep them up. The fork and knife are gum paste covered in the fondant mix. I added spiky fur and some last painted details. I took the cake to a party so that it would be eaten. Night fell over in transport so we propped him up for an hour and then ate the cake.
