Ripple in the Sand cake by Melissa Cody

Description

I'm excited to enter Threadcakes for the 6th year in a row! Decorating cakes is my hobby, not my career so this contest gives me a fun challenge every year. I've been playing around recently with using fondant lines on my cakes instead of hand painting them so I thought I would take that to the extreme with this entry.

I made the sun first as an experiment to see if I could make this design work. I was happy with it, so I then colored fondant and cut out the base colors of the mountains and sky. I did eventually change the bottom color to match the picture better. I traced some of the lines from the picture as a guide and then did the best I could to fill in the blanks. I made hundreds and hundreds and hundreds of fondant lines. I started with thick ones from an extruder (my best friend in this process) and then rolled them to different thicknesses. I would switch back and forth between areas on the picture to try to keep from going crazy. The dark blue fondant was a struggle to work with- it was very soft after mixing in enough food coloring to make it the color that I wanted. It helped to throw it in the freezer for a few minutes before the extruder. After finally finishing the fondant lines, I made the rain drops, deer and tree out of fondant.

Once the fondant "picture" was finished, I baked the cake. I used a box mix yellow cake and then made the buttercream from scratch. After the cake was cool, I cut it to size, layered it with buttercream and covered it in white fondant. I then placed the fondant picture on top. I had five days off of work and this was my main focus. It took me about 35-40 hours to do the whole thing. I maybe never want to make a fondant line again! Since my days off were over, I took it to work to be devoured.
