Hugs Keep Us Alive cake by Trisha Powers

Description

When I saw this tee shirt design I fell in love with it! It is the cutest display of human organs I have ever seen!! I knew I had to create this design in cake!
I chose chocolate cake, as I thought that Red Velvet cake would be a little too gruesome. I carved out the different organs from one layer of cake; the lungs, the liver, and the stomach.
Next I frosted the organs with Swiss Butter cream frosting. Once they had a cooling session in the refrigerator, I coated each organ in the appropriate chocolate clay. The lungs were covered in pink, the liver in purple, and the stomach in yellow.
After the organs received their clay coats, I checked the placement to make sure they all fit together. The heart is molded completely from red modeling chocolate clay. Then I created the spine and ribs. The top two vertebrae are marshmallows covered with white chocolate modeling clay. I created the ribs by rolling the same white chocolate modeling clay into longer snakes.
I then placed the spine and ribs on the panel. I covered the panel with green paper because it reminded me of a surgical table. Once the spine and ribs were in place, I put the organs on top of the ribs. Then I curved the ribs around the organs to look like ribs. I carved the hands of the ribs after curving them around the organs.
Next I created arms in respective colors for the organs: pink lung arms, purple liver arm, yellow stomach arm, and red heart arm.
Finally I used melted chocolate to pipe the happy, hugging faces on the organs! I wish I could tell you how long the process took me. However, I was having so much fun, and enjoying the design so much, I lost track of time!
I took the cake to my running club, and we enjoyed the cake as a tasty reward after a hard run!
