The Flinger Sunflowers cake by Trisha Powers

Description

I am a huge fan of VanGough, so I wanted to create this cake in his honor.

I made a top painting of this image by flattening fondant, then graphing the drawing on to the fondant. After I drew with marker, I used color dust with lemon flavoring to paint. Lemon works best, but mint was also used. This ended up affecting the flavor of the frosting in the end.

The cake is a spice cake, and I used left over frosting (shhh, don't tell), so the filling is vanilla butter cream, and the outside is Baily's butter cream.

After the cake was made, I placed the painting on top of the cake. Then I piped a frame around the edges. The frame had to be painted gold, of course! This is where the mint flavor seeped in to the butter cream.

I took the cake to a costume party where I knew it would be apriciated: amongst Art teachers! However, I can empathize with Vincent, as I had to explain the visual to my Art teacher friends. Despite the misunderstanding, the cake was very tasty and enjoyed by all.
