Description
I chose Springfield Still Life because it's the Simpsons, it had simpler shapes (which I was hoping would be easier to carve out), and it looked like it would be fun to paint. I think the star-shaped cushion (Maggie) was the hardest to cut out. I used gel food coloring to paint the characters.
The cake is made with Duncan Hines Classic Yellow cake mix and it's covered with a basic confectioners' sugar-butter buttercream. I decided to not cover the cake in fondant because I wasn't sure I had enough to cover the cake and make the shapes. I hand-trimmed the shapes out of store-bought Wilton's Rolled Fondant using a paring knife, a spoon to texture Marge's hair, and even a pen to make the circles for the lamp shade's chain. The whole thing took about 5 hours from start to finish.
