It's All Fun and Games Until Somebody Brings a Briefcase cake by Ransella Pereira

Description

When I saw this contest, I knew I had to participate, but I don't really have any experience with fondant or with decorating cakes. So here it is -- my ode to buttercream. This was a lot of fun to make. I used two boxes of the Betty Crocker "Butter Recipe Yellow" cake mixes, a buttercream recipe from the side of the confectioners' sugar box, Martha Stewart's marzipan recipe, and ready-made rolled fondant. Well, actually, my faithful assistant, Sue, used the fondant to cut out all of the lettering.

The briefcase is made of two stacked cakes, frosted with buttercream. I decided to add the monkeys because (1) they always look like they're having fun and (2) everyone loves monkeys. I molded those from marzipan mixed with gel food coloring. The hand and handle are made from marzipan too and we were quite happy with how realistic the hand turned out.

It took from 3 in the afternoon to half past midnight from start to edible finish. Nothing like a sugar rush before bedtime. All in all, a great experience.
