Description
I saw "Ambition killed the cat" and it made me laugh, so I chose that as one of my designs for this year.
I started off by baking the cake, which are two 10 inch rounds made out of white betty crocker cake mix. I forgot to get photos of this though. I also made my fondant, which is a variation on Toba Garret's recipe.
The next day, I started by making my buttercream, which was a pain in the rear end. The weather in Texas didn't cooperate, and a host of other problems led to my buttercream taking over three hours to make and it was a very soft buttercream at that.
Once I had the buttercream made, I sliced and diced the cakes. Each cake got leveled, then split into two separate layers. I filled each layer with some of that delicious french buttercream. After that, the cake got a quick crumb coat, and I shoved it into the fridge for the next day.
The next day came far too soon, and I started by tinting my fondant purple. Due to camera difficulties, the purple isn't showing up as quite the same shade as it was in real life. I quickly rolled out the fondant and covered my cake.
Then I pulled out some spare white fondant and started on the power lines and birds. The power lines are coils of fondant, and the birds are small discs squished down to make the right shape. The cat was cut out of fondant also.
The power lines on the sides were also whipped out of some coils of fondant, just to jazz up the sides of the cake.
It sat in the fridge over night, then I cut a piece for myself and hauled it to work where my ravenous coworkers quickly devoured it. Over all, it probably took about five hours to do, not counting the time while the cakes were in the oven or my buttercream was whipping.
