Optimust cake by Natissa Small

Description

So, I meant to make a 2D submission with my first "last minute" cake but I guess being 11 layers high it counted for 3D cakes. Unhappy with this and realizing that the deadline to finish a cake was monday not sunday, I had to take one last crack at it! This is my last-last minute cake.

I started after 7 pm on Optimust! I whipped up a super fast batch of our favourite chocolate cake, crazy (or wacky) cake in mere minutes. Dealt with the kids while it baked and in a mere 1.25 hours rolled out the fondant, cut out a big circle, free handed the design with a mixture of gel colour and clear vanilla extract. I used left over peanut butter frosting which looked sad so I added my very last cup of icing sugar, more vanilla, and cocoa! I only had enough to cover the top of the cake and provide a nice smooth surface for the fondant.

Aside from my serious time constraint the biggest challenge with this cake was the type of black food colouring I was using. If I mixed it with too much vanilla to get the nice ink-y effect I wanted, it turned all sorts of colours.

The paint is still a bit wet in the photos and its the screwy lighting of my kitchen flourescents but I hope you like it all the same! It smells really good by the way. Just so you know. As a matter of fact, I now have to find someone to give this cake too...
