Treasure Chest cake by Andrea Lloyd

Description

Last year I saw this entry: http://www.threadcakes.com/entries/view/1127. She used royal icing transfers. I thought it was amazing and I really wanted to try it out.

I printed the picture and taped a piece of parchment paper over it and started to pipe. I was hoping to just pipe out each shape and then transfer them to a cake iced in buttercream, but the pieces started to come detached from the parchment as they dried and some cracked, so I had to fill in the whole background with royal icing as well. Filling in the background engulfed the edges of the shapes so I did have to go back over them all again, this time I applied the royal icing with a paint brush or a toothpick to be able to apply more details and shading.

Then I baked a chocolate cake and iced it with chocolate buttercream and plopped the royal icing transfer on top.

The sea monster and the scorpion are my favourite parts!
