Description
I like nothing better in the heat of the summer than a popsicle of fudgestick, so Summertime Treat seemed like a perfect choice for a 2D cake. The cake is chocolate with vanilla buttercream icing. I dyed five sections of fondant to make the coloured stripes, and used chocolate fondant for the dripping fudge/chocolate. The stick is made out of gumpaste tinted brown. I spent quite a bit of time staring at the different images of the design trying to figure out what was written on the stick, and finally managed to get it right. But now I need the rest of the joke!
I drew the design I wanted on parchment paper and then used toothpicks to stick it to the cake so it wouldn't move while I carved around it. Each stripe of coloured fondant was measured out and laid next to each other, and I used small rectangles of fondant to cover the teeth marks. For the fudge covering, I used my same parchment paper piece to get the teeth marks right, and measure the bottom. I cut out the 'drips' and then laid it over the whole cake, trimming and using water to seal it to the fondant underneath as needed. The stick is inserted into the cake using toothpicks, and the writing is black edible foodmarker.
I've been volunteering at our city's busker fest this week so I took the cake down with me to cut and feed the numerous volunteers and buskers. There wasn't even crumbs left by the time my shift was done.
