Geology cake by Caitlyn Hupman

Description

I went with Geology for my first entry into this year's Threadcakes due to the design looking like cake. It seemed perfect to me.

I ended up using five full sheets of chocolate cake to stack and make the design. Thinking I'd finish the cake in a day or two, I lacked dowels or a cake board in between layers. Thanks to a cold that spread my decorating process over three days, I should have used these. Hindsight.

Each cake was cut into rectangles measuring 6.5 by 8 inches and stacked on top of each other with vanilla buttercream between the layers. I left the bottom two layers of cake un-iced to represent the "dirt" layers at the bottom of the design. I dirty iced the middle layers, leaving the top one free for the "dirt" section at the very top. I decorated the middle layers of the earth using three shades of brown fondant, green fondant and white fondant. The power plant, parking lot and trees on top are also fondant, and the river and details to each layer are black edible marker. I took some liberties with the exact details, but that happens.

The entire cake is edible, and provided a great lunch time snack to a staff of elementary teachers (who are looking forward to more entries).
