Description
The colours and textures attracted me to this design and I could see it on a round cake. I used a combination of gumpaste and fondant for the cake and
I enjoyed manipulating the materials to get the folds of the fabric and trying to get a more three-dimensional effect.
I formed the arm and gun in straight gumpaste so it would be hard enough to support itself, because it would be protruding off of the cake. The rest was a combination of gumpaste mixed with fondant (50:50).
To enhance the 3D look, I used food colours to paint on details as well as highlights and shadows.
The cake was banana and blueberry with a cream cheese icing (forgot to take a photo of the masked cake before I put the fondant on but there was icing under the fondant – I promise!).
I originally intended to put the cake against a white background for the final photo because the design kind of looked like it had incorporated the Japanese flag into it. The white, however, kind of flared and dulled the colours so I left it on this pink base of a cake carrier I have. I took a shot and thought it actually didn’t look too bad on the pink – better than the white!
