Love Bomb cake by Jessica Maeder

Description

I chose this cake, because my family loves Minecraft. My husband is looking forward to the day that he can teach our 2 year old how to play.

The base of the cake is chocolate cake, with ganache frosting, the tree trunk is vanilla cake with vanilla Italian meringue buttercream, and the top of the tree is both vanilla cake and rice crispy treats. I covered the base cake and the top of the cake in marshmallow fondant and the tree trunk is chocolate marshmallow fondant.

This cake took a bit of time to create. I did it in stages over two days, so I'm unsure how long. The top of the tree was the most time consuming, because, having never used rice crispy treats in a cake, there was some trial and error involved. I ended up gluing the cubes of treats together using royal icing, and letting it dry completely before touching it again. I stacked the tree trunk up, filled and frosted it, and then froze it, so I could trim it down with a knife, then frosted again. The creeper is made out of fondant, as well. My daughter thought I was making a green Olaf snowman and really wanted to help. When it came to his thought bubble, I was out of my league, so I put the heart on the tree next to his head.

Since it was a lot of cake, and we're a family of two adults and a toddler, plus my parents, who come by to sample, I took the cake to my husband's office, so the people there could eat it. I didn't do a great job on the supports, and it was an interesting ride. The people there really liked it, though, and my husband said it was all eaten.
