Afternoon Snack cake by Kristi Caccippio

Description

I really wanted to challenge myself with hand painting this year, and I LOVE this design, so I had to try it. For this cake, I baked a chocolate quarter sheet. I cut it in half and split it, as I only wanted a 1 layer cake. I frosted it in vanilla American buttercream and then covered it in white Satin Ice fondant. Then I put the cake in the fridge overnight to set and harden up. I printed out a negative image and then traced over the main lines with a #2 pencil. Then I pulled my cake out of the fridge and buffed it with a light coating of shortening. I then placed my parchment tracing over the cake and used my ball tool to go over all the lines, making sure they all transferred. I used a mixture of Progel food colors and vodka, as well as edible food pens to create this cake. I started painting the woman first because I knew it would take me a long time (and I knew if I messed her up, it was pointless to keep going!). Once I got her basics down, I painted in the background, followed by the teeth. When I felt like I needed to get a large chunk done because it was taking so long, I would paint black on the sides in large chunks. Overall, I think this cake took me about 10 hours total- there was a lot of painting in sections and layers to let other areas dry. Oddly enough, I felt like making the white water to be more challenging than I expected it to be, more so than the woman. :)
