Death and Tooth Decay cake by Natalie Black

Description

We took a picture of the cake with us to Bulk Barn and had a candy scavenger hunt. We challenged ourselves to recreate the shirt design as closely as possible, because I suppose that seemed like more fun.
The nose is a pair of "big foot feet" with the toes and centres removed.
The eyes are spirals cut out of Fruit To Go dipped in red sugar.
One of the only other items we weren't able to find was the multicoloured bananas - we could only get yellow ones. So while the cake was cooling we tried to dye the yellow bananas with food colouring. It didn't work, but my fellow cake baker (Meaghan!) suggested we try removing the yellow coating with sand paper to see if the food colouring would stick better to the white candy beneath. It worked! But as you can imagine, the novelty of sanding bananas wears off after the first few, so we only sanded enough of them to make the blues and one or two purples. For the other colours in the design we just used yellow bananas.
The cake is just a store-bought vanilla mix cake with store-bought vanilla icing.
We went through the prominent confectionery items in the image and set aside all the pieces we would need to recreate them. With the remaining candy we created a skull shaped layer by sticking them in the icing. On top of this layer we placed all the items we had previously set aside, as they appear in the design.
Then we ate it.
