This is my third cake! And what a blast it was to make. I decided on this cake because someone was giving me a bunch of different designs and she had a great idea for the construction of this design in particular that I loved and I went with it.
I did this cake over a 3 day period. First I made the cake which is just simple chocolate cake. I did that ahead of time so it would be easier to play with later on with so much cooling time.
The next day I did most of the detail pieces. The only thing I did with the cake itself is level it off because honestly, I didn't have any butter cream icing yet! The detail work includes all of the feathers, the face, the front of the headpiece, the side pieces and the doughnut like circles. I used icing coloring to color the gum paste the different colors and for the front of the headpiece, I used the icing color with a toothpick to create the painting. Everything was done freehand. (Oh and it was my first time even touching gum paste!) The feathers were really fun to make. I just used a knife, cut the shape out, and then cut the feathering out.
The face is made by using a mascaraed mask, taping the eyes and noes off, and I melted white chocolate and made a molded face. It's a solid piece of chocolate because I was really worried about a hollow piece breaking! haha This is the idea my friend had that I thought was awesome.
The next day (today) I did most of the construction of the cake itself. I covered the cake in fondant. I colored the fondant with green and blue to give it that sea foam green color. It's somewhat marbled as well. (I love the look of marbled colored fondant) Next thing I did was paint the face. I painted the facing with watered down icing color and then used a paper towel to wipe down the extra color to give it a more even feeling. I used the blue and red to make the purple color.
Next I painted the feathers to give them more depth of color and to look more realistic. I also painted the lines of the face to make it pop more. I then started to assemble all the details of the cake FINALLY! I used the extra butter cream as glue for a lot of the pieces. I also made the bead necklaces out of red and purple gum paste and used a wire to string them. Lastly I did the top of the headpiece and the pendant for the necklace. I used gum paste and hand painted the pendant and the headpiece!
This is probably my favorite cake to do because it was more art oriented than all the others. It was so fun painting and doing so much detail work on them. I loved the little details of it. It was so awesome to make and I'm REALLY happy with the final product. =]
