Playin' In The Sprinkler cake by Katie Johnson

Description

I just bought this t-shirt for my 3 year old cousin for her birthday and thought it was so cute! So when I heard about the threadcakes contest I just had to try out this playful design!

I started out with 2 layers of marbled cake (chocolate and yellow cake - the best of both worlds!). Once these cooled, I leveled them out, stacked them (with a layer of homemade buttercream in-between) and spread with a thin layer of buttercream for the crumb coat. Once the crumb coat had hardened a bit in the fridge, I covered the cake with the rest of the buttercream. Then topped it off with a sheet of white rolled fondant for a clean finish.

Then I made some swiss buttercream (from Martha's new cupcake book - this recipe for buttercream is heavenly! but then again, what isn't with a pound of butter in it?) which I dyed green so I could cover the fondant with "grass blades". I made the blades with a small #4 tip in a piping bag. (This alone took a good 1-2 hours due to the tedious nature ... but it turned out great, so it was worth it considering the end result!)

The figures are made out of leftover rice crispy treats from earlier in the weekend and more rolled fondant (which I dyed the appropriate colors). Most of the detail work on the figures was done by hand or cut out with a craft knife or cookie cutters. The "ice cream" for the ice cream cone is some of the buttercream I had set aside before dying green. The sprinkler/hose were also made out of fondant and were shaped by hand. For the finishing touch, everything was topped with a "sprinkle" of multi-colored jimmies (but of course)!

Overall, I was pretty pleased with the outcome of this cake. I had so much fun making it as it is one of my first attempts at "elaborately" decorating a cake and delving into cake "sculpture". While it took me a while to complete (the better part of a day), it was well worth it... and delicious to boot!
