Description
Our names are Mary and Michael and we live in Issaquah, WA near Seattle. Right now we are in the middle of a major heat wave so we decided to pick a nice cool t-shirt for our Thread Cake. Also we really wanted to make that great walrus.
Michael baked the cakes from scratch on Saturday. He used over 50 eggs to make a vanilla chiffon cake. He had to make 2 half sheet cakes so it took most of the day. He’s sort of into baking, so he overachieved a bit…
We did the rest of the cake making on Sunday (the next day). First, we made butter cream frosting and iced the cakes. Then it was time to work on the 3D elements including a walrus made from cereal treats and fondant, an ice cream truck cake (made from cake and fondant, not ice cream unfortunately), and an ice cream truck driver man made from gum paste.
All in all it took us over ten hours on Sunday to get it done. It was our first time working with gum paste and that was tough. We finally figured out that adding vegetable shortening made things a lot easier.
We had a great time making and eating the cake. The saddest point on the project was the part when I had to cut into our new walrus friend. Sad. The cake tasted great! It will be enjoyed by many many people in the coming days.
