Russian Cargo cake by Michael Luther

Description

This was a fun, but long process to create this cake. It was created by my wife and I. I baked the vanilla chiffon cake from scratch, made the frosting, and iced and stacked the cakes. My wife did most of the fondant work and carving, as well as all of the cutting the many tetris pieces.

It took two full days to create this cake. The first day was filled with baking, icing and carving the cakes as well as cutting the tetris squares from fondant. It took two half sheet cakes to make enough cake for this. The second day was decorating day. We covered all the cakes with fondant. The tetris pieces were covered with white fondant before attaching the tetris squares. The crane was ancored in the cake with a piece of oven-baked clay. The crane arm itself was a piece of metal rod. The hanging tetris piece was supported with a metal structure and hung with steel wire, but was filled with cake.
