Description
This cake was extremely difficult. This was mostly because I decided to make this cake (as well as all my other threadcakes entries) 100% edible. There are no toothpicks or dowels or anything holding it up, not even rice krispy treats. Just cake, fondant, chocolate, and gumpaste.
For the cake inside, I used pound cake for sturdiness. I wanted to try some new flavors, so I made the cake coffee flavored with a caramel buttercream, which was a yummy combo.
It took me a while to figure out the best way to make this cake stand up, as I didn't want it to look like the bird was just sitting on the ground. I made a platform which I covered with sky blue, so I had a place for the suitcase to hang, and set the bird on top of that. Everything else was set right on top of the bird and "glued" in to place with white chocolate.
This cake didn't turn out exactly as I had hoped, but am very happy with the way the feathers turned out. It is hard to make feathers out of fondant that don't look really heavy, and I think i did a pretty good job of that. And the little flight mask is super cute.
