War And Peas cake by Lilly Silbert

Description

This was the first cake for the contest that I made. It was a lot of fun because let's face it, the peas are so cute. Plus I love peas. My niece's favorite first food was peas.
I wanted to truly make this a 3d cake so I tried to figure out how to make the peas their own little cakes and set them in a diorama. Very third grade, I know but so cool. I wanted to keep it very simple and all about the peas.
I used yellow cake with fresh buttercream frosting mixed together and sculpted the balls. I hand colored all of my fondant and let the color settle. Then it was time to make the helmets. I had some foam balls that were basically the size of my final peas and used them as dummies. I mixed gum paste into the army green color to make the helmets solid and crunchy when they dried. Then I created the pattern in 2d and molded them into the correct form. Getting the right curl to the edges was a little difficult but more than worth the effort. I put the helmets on the foam dummies and let them dry for a couple days.
When the helmets were ready, I took my light olive colored fondant and took each ball of cake and covered it. The hard parts about using fondant are fourfold; keeping it from ripping, keeping it thick enough to prevent show through, finishing it quickly enough so it won't crackle and blending your seams so them won't show. It took more than once on the first pea. Then I took the background, extended the size and printed it out. Then I glued it to a classic diorama cardboard box and arranged the peas for the photo shoot.
Give peas a chance!
