Pillow Fight cake by Lilly Silbert

Description

I chose pillow fight because I had seen other entries and it looked really challenging. It can be really hard to take an inanimate object and create a character with a clear personality. Do that and having them all relate to one another really made it a fun scene.
First I made chocolate cake. yum. I made a fresh vanilla buttercream, american style. Ah, sugar. It's the base of my food pyramid. :) Then I blended them and sculpted the pillow bodies. After this I started coloring the fondant and trying to decide how to interpret the patterns. When the cake balls were thoroughly chilled, I took them out and started covering them with fondant. Trying to get the corners of the pillows shaped properly was key. Its a good thing fondant is flexible because I had to readjust them a bit.
While the pillows were drying, I started cutting out the patterns. I didn't have a little heart cutter so I got creative and used a drinking straw that I squashed into the right shape. Then I cut out the striped and created the facial features and feather fluff. I let this all set up a bit and applied them to the pillows. I used food coloring to paint specks on one pillow and a face on another just for variety and a change in technique.
Between coloring the fondant and painting with the food color, my hands are STILL blue. Psst, I think I'm turning into a smurf. :)
I used a dark background to focus on just the pillows and the little feathers. A lollipop stick was helpful to keep the two finalists on the top of the heap. I think they all look a bit tuckered out and ended up sprawling out nicely. I hope you like them because they tasted great!
