HEEEAAAAVYYY Metal!!!

THREADCAKES FAIL!:(

You win some , you lose some. I've been going a little nuts w/ the Threadcakes entries (I'm currently unemployed and working on these cakes has really helped me destress between searching and applying for jobs). So far, everything had been going well. Until this one:)

I really like the heavy metal design and wanted to give it a go. I made the heads, arms, and guitars out of gumpaste. I saw the bellies and figured that my easter egg cake pan would be perfect (my first mistake). The cake was strawberry w/ chocolate fudge icing.

As I started putting things together I realized that I hadn't thought out structure enough. But, never one to stop out of common sense, I kept going. I covered a base cake with red fondant, and then carved, frosted, and fondant covered the body shape and put it on top of the base cake. I painted his gumpaste guitar, attempted to glue it to his body w/royal icing (the fondant was sweating with the humidity and it didn't want to stick and I had to prop it up with a chunk of foam) I attached his head and arms; and then made his collar, vest and hair from black fondant. The figure kept sweating, bulging, leaning, and otherwise signaling its imminent demise.

But did I stop? No- Maybe I could use the drummer figure to prop up the guitar-player. So, I stacked up some more cake amd covered it w/fondant. I attached the head and arms, and then made the vest and hair from fondant. However, instead of propping up the guitar-player the drummer itself decided to sweat, bulge, and lean(away from the other figure of course)

At this point I finally had to admit defeat- the cake didn't seem it would last very much longer:( Besides not planning my structure, I had also under-estimated how much cake I needed. To continue I would have to do some baking, and perhaps make more fondant- all for a dying cake.

Even though the cake kinda self-destructed I decided to submit it anyway- I'm sure there are other bakers out there who have been having their own cake emergencies so, what the heck? Hope you enjoy my failure:) I still had fun
