Heeeaaavyyy Metal! Part Two
I had already admitted defeat when my first attempt at this design self-destructed a few days ago. But I just couldn't make myself throw away the gumpaste body parts I had already made. So, :If at first you don't succeed, try, try again".
This time around I wanted to try a laying down cake so I wouldn't have to worry about so much about structure. I started out w/ a yellow cake and homemade buttercream and marshmallow fondant. I roughly sketched out how I wanted to start carving w/ food color and started cutting. I wanted the figures to be layered and some appear closer than others. I started w/ the drummer, covered him w/ fondant, and added the head and arms. Then I did the same w/ the bass player, though I had to slice off part of his head to get him to fit right.
Then I added another layer of cake for the guitar player, fondant, etc... Then 2 layers of cake for the singer. I had to make a new gumpaste head for the singer at this point, as my old one was way to small. I added more body parts; then made everybody's legs from more fondant (same for the bass players arms.
I wasn't sure how to finish the cake, so I decided to try something new and painted the flames onto the cake board w/ melted white chocolate.
I feel vindicated in my second attempt at this cake:) Hope you like it.
