Witching Hour cake by Kelli Watkins

Description

As soon as I saw the Witching Hour shirt, the idea for the cake hit me. I wanted the ghosts, spirits, etc. to actually be circling the cake. A bit adventurous for me, but I was feeling up to it. I made the cakes on a Friday night after work (2 6" chocolate and 4 6" vanilla). Saturday my friend Amber came over and the process began. I covered the cake board with purple fondant, stacked the cakes, cut a flat surface on the front and covered with vanilla buttercream and black fondant. Got them on the board and steadied. Then we moved on to the clock. The parts of the clock are made of fondant. We textured the panels and pillars and added the gold accents using gold highlighter. Somewhere in there I piped the ghosts and spirits. Once they set, I placed the piping on the 6" cake pans and let them sit to dry. I added a fondant border to the cake board and used the gold highlighter on that as well. Added some purple edible glitter to add some sparkle. It was a full day's work plus some. Sunday - time to add the piping! I used some piping gel and very carefully attached the edges of the 'cages' to the sides of the cake where I had cut the flat surface. Stuck a couple of ghosts up top and it was done! I enjoyed making this cake and was happy to see that it came out more or less how I pictured in my head. And of course, it was yummy (at least the vanilla cake - I leave the chocolate for the hubby).
