Hey, Mr. Blue Sky cake by Angela Righi

Description

In my kitchen, surprise is the name of the game. I love to experiment and create food which catches the diner off guard, either through the use of ingredients or presentation. This tendency toward experimentation should not come as a surprise when I reveal my occupation as an undergraduate student in pre-pharmacy!

I immediately saw potential in “Hey, Mr. Blue Sky” because of the way a bleak cityscape attempted to futilely conceal the blue, cloud-filled sky. I quickly whipped up (literally) batter for my favorite kind of cake- angel food- and added blue food dye in a marbled fashion.

The resulting cake was a beautiful robin’s egg blue with surprisingly successful marbling. But to make sure that the idea of clouds was represented, I cut the cooled cake into three layers and added homemade whipped cream in between each one.

With the blue sky finished, I turned my attention to the grim, gray skyline of “Hey, Mr. Blue Sky.” I covered the cake with cream cheese icing tinted with black dye, then set out to draw the buildings and clouds in black gel. This turned out to be a bit tougher than anticipated! I added shading to the buildings to cover up some patchy piping, and decided to swirl the clouds instead of outlining them.

The latter decision concerning the clouds was, in my opinion, the best one I made! The resulting swirls of smog were swirled with edible silver dust as a final touch. This Threadcake was fully realized when the first piece was removed- and we could all say, “Hey, Mr. Blue Cake!”
