Description
Well, after not entering last year, I was determined to get something submitted this year! When I saw the Space Needs Color shirt, I knew just what I would do.
This basically took a day, though I tested out some fondant stuff and made lemon curd the day before. The cupcakes are super simple, just white cake mix with a few additives (particularly sour cream to make them moist). I split the batter into six bowls (one cup of batter per bowl) and dyed them with Wilton's food gel. I used red red, lemon yellow, kelly green, royal blue, and violet (orange was made by mixing red and yellow). Once that was done, I just randomly spooned batter into each of my (colorful!) cups, and baked.
The frosting is a fluffy almond frosting. I filled each cupcake with lemon curd because, well, we had a ton of egg yolks leftover from other baking, and I'd been wanting to make it anyway! The resulting cupcake was magnificently tasty.
The shuttle and paint tubes were made from Wilton's fondant - the paint tubes were dyed with the same coloring gel as the cupcakes. With the help of a few toothpicks, my paint tube shuttle was constructed.
I built the cupcake tower without frosting because it was less messy and I didn't want the white to take away from the rainbow effect. I posted pictures of the cupcakes after deconstruction, plus frosting too, though.
For anyone interested in the cupcake and/or frosting recipe, just search for 'colorburst cupcakes' on Google, and it's the first entry (on the Our Best Bites blog).
