Description
So this week was my last week at my internship and I wanted to make a cake. I had several threadless designs picked out, but this was the design I wanted to make the most. Overall it took around 8 hours over the course of a week to make and is no where near perfect, but I ran out of time. It was chocolate cake with buttercream frosting and my co-workers loved it.
I began by running colored gumpaste through my pasta machine, cutting out equal strips of each kind and gluing them together with water to form the rainbow. To get the wavy shape of the rainbow, I rigged together some styrofoam, foil, and cardboard tubes, and placed the prepared rainbow onto the apparatus to dry. Next I mixed together some pastillage for the background. This was the first time working with pastillage and it was a little bumpy on the surface, but a pretty good first shot at it. I let the pastiage dry for 4 days before painting it.
Then I made the fork, spoon, cloud and sun from gumpaste, and painted them after they dried for a few days. Next thing I did was bake the cake, fill it, carve the mountains, and put a layer of buttercream frosting on the outside. Then I put on the fondant and airbrushed the "grass". Next I made the river out of gumpaste and colored the water and rainbow. Then I made the bear, fish, and bunny. After all those were made I assembled everything and brought it to work with me.
I hope you enjoy!
