Eating Competition cake by Becky Brine

Description

So after looking through hundreds of designs i finally settled on this little beauty! It's the perfect mix of cute and down right disturbing. However, i didn't realise just how wrong it would feel to make small limbs of children floating in bowls of blood.. but i digress!

I started by making a vanilla sponge, of which i filled with yummy white choc spread (after trying a couple of spoonfuls to make sure it tasted ok). I'm always super impatient when it comes to the baking process, as i just want to skip straight to the decorating!

I'm sure you don't want to hear about the basics.. colouring fondant, rolling it out etc. etc. Soo moving on! I made the animals out of rice crispy treats (unfortunately not home made, again im too impatient!) and then covered them in fondant. Then it was on to the fun bit of making the details! Some parts (such as the bones and shoes) were literally the size of a finger nail.. fiddly stuff! Once every thing had been sculpted i started on the paint work. And by paint work, i mean splattering blood every where and painting on the dead eyes on the heads. Grizzly.

My favourite moment whilst making this cake? When i shouted to my sister 'What bowl of limbs is your favourite?' and every one just kinda stared at me as i realised how weird this was.

And then finally, after persuading myself to do it, i cut the cake. I shared the cake. And i ate, the cake! Nom nom nom :)
