Description
This is my second entry this year, and there was ALOT more involved with this one. I had to try and fit it in around work and other things, so it's taken me a fair while to complete!
Lets start from the beginning.. Cake, chocolate cake! I baked some sponges, then carved and frosted them to look like a giant mushroom. Or fairie house. I then covered it in fondant and painted it to look a little more shroomy.
I then covered the board and painted a brown and black explosion-y looking thing. Best way i can describe to you guys anyway!
Then i started on the big bad boy mushrooms, as i was saving the lil ones til last! I made them using rice crispy treats and carved them and covered them in fondant. Once again i brought out their inner shroom with some painted on edible food paint.
Now i can't exactly remember the order that i went from there..
So let's just summarize.
The fairies were made from fondant and hand sculpted and carved. I painted them all with edible food paint. And yes, it was strange giving fairies boob jobs..
The spiders needed a little more structure than the fairies, so unfortunately i had to use some inedible supports in the legs. The last thing i wanted was spiders legs falling all over the place! The bodies were made from rice crispy treats and then covered in fondant. The legs were wooden dowels covered in black fondant. I then used a craft knife to rough up the fondant and look a little more spider like.
Other than that all the little details such as the heart wooden door, the mushrooms, the spider drool.. they were all hand crafted and painted with food paste.
Ooooh, but the good fairies wings were made out of edible paper! Not sure why im excited about that, i guess it just reminds me of the flying saucer sweets.
Anyway! I hope you like the cake and i'll see you next year with a hopefully winning entry haha!
