Description
This is my second threadcake. For the first one, I was totally militant about making everything from scratch, but for this beast of a cake I did break down and used store bought fondant. Everything else is from scratch though: chocolate cake with mint buttercream frosting, which tasted awesome! I had to make three sheet cakes in 2 batches (I really should have invested in a third cake pan...) I think all told it took about 40 hours to complete.
The book, the entire back structure and the koi all are made of cake. I used fondant for all the sculpting, which the exception of the robot hand holding the pencil which is made of gum paste (and regrettably one toothpick). Technically this makes the cake 99.7% edible, though I'd be hard pressed to take a bite out of anything made of gum paste :)
The painting was done with vodka and gel food coloring and the whole thing is sitting on an 18 x 24 in. board of foam core.
Notably, this is also the first time I've actually done anything with video footage I've taken, so that is also very exciting!! To fit the whole process in a reasonable length of time the footage is sped up to 100x which is pretty fun to watch. The soundtrack to the video is "Land of the Freak" by King Khan and his Sensational Shrines! Enjoy!
