Flowing Inspiration cake by Erin Okuno

Description

Once upon a time, there was a girl who had the house all to herself for the weekend. She had nothing to do except hang out with her kitties, so she decided to create one final entry for the Threadcakes contest. The insane amount of free time (~30 hours) she had over the weekend allowed her to focus completely on the cake. She managed to complete it just in time. The following account details how that long, lonely weekend progressed.

For my final Threadcakes entry, I wanted to create something that was really detailed. I chose "Flowing Inspiration" because it is a beautiful design, and I thought it would be a fun cake to make. The cake was made over the course of three days. There were lots of details, so it took a loooooong time to finish everything. I baked homemade pound cake because I love, love, love pound cake.

Day 1: Carving and covering. I started carving out the pound cake. After carving it out, I covered it in homemade buttercream. Then, I covered it all in fondant.

Day 2: Details, details, details. All of the details were made out of gumpaste or fondant, depending on the part. I did most of the carving and modeling on the second day.

Day 3: Painting and assembly (and more details). I painted everything with gel food coloring diluted with vodka. This took a lot longer than expected because there were so many layers of color. I also put the finishing touches on the bird, ship, tree, petals, etc., and I assembled it all. Then, I proceeded to take a bajillion pictures. Finally, I ate some and slept.

Notes: The little fisherman was one of my favorite parts, and I even managed to make a tiny pole for him. He is less than an inch in size. I took a picture with a salt shaker next to the cake to give an idea of the size of everything. The creation is entirely edible. I did NOT use any toothpicks, dowels, rods, or any other type of support for this cake because I wanted it to be "pure." I had a blast making it, and it kept me from being bored all weekend. Plus, I got to eat cake. Mmm...
