Day vs Night

I decided to ask a few friends to suggest designs for me to make into cake and promised them they would get to eat the winning design to get them interested. I'm usually more excited about cake than anyone I'm around. This design wouldn't have been anything I would have picked (which is why I asked them) but I think it translated well into an interesting and pretty cake. It took about 8 hours or so from baking to finish. I knew right away that keeping the illusion of the two sides was important and decided to really make it look like an upside down cake on the bottom. Construction wise it wasn't any different than stacking any other tiered cake and I did use minimal bamboo supports, about 3 in total and it's on a cardboard base. Other than that the entire cake is edible. It's covered in fondant with royal icing and gumpaste decorations. The cake itself was vanilla with an almond and vanilla icing.
