Lovebirds cake by Karilee Schmeckpeper

Description

This is my second threadcake. Last year I made a “Cookies” cake for my son’s birthday. This year I chose the “Love birds” design because of its simplicity and elegance for my daughter’s birthday.

I made two recipes of chocolate cake. One from a box of devils food cake and the other was “cake brownie” from better homes and garden. I decided to layer it two part devils food and one part brownie. I use my favorite frosting recipe that consists of heavy whipping cream, French vanilla instant pudding mix and ¼ cup powder sugar. This is just as thick as butter cream but with just a few easy ingredients. And tastes great. Although it does end up being rather yellow in color.

I wanted a clean white surface to draw the design on so I made powder sugar fondant. I always have a hard time with fondant but I try anyways. The first layer of fondant was cracking apart around the top edge so I rolled out another sheet and covered the top again. This made the sides lumpy. Oh well, I began to apply the design to the top. I printed the design on paper, cut out the shape and used it as a kind of stencil on the fondant. I used a toothpick to gently draw a line around the heart shape. Then I continued to use the toothpick to draw the rest of the lines. With lines in place I used food color and Q-tips to paint the red, blue and purple.

I had planned to use left over frosting to decorate the lower edge with green leaves and purple flowers. I went ahead and just worked my way up the sides with the ‘foliage’ to cover the lumpy and wonky surface. The final touch was to gently sprinkle some powder sugar over the bottom of the love bird design.

I made this for my daughters 11th birthday. She and her two brothers happened to be out of town staying with their cousins for part of summer break. We had it planned out so that we would have her party at their house and afterwards we’d bring all the kids home. I packed up the cake in my plastic cake carrier and into a cooler with some ice packs to try and keep it cool on our three hour drive in 100 F.degree summer heat. It didn’t quite survive the trip. The fondant fell apart and the top design was ruined by the time we got up there. Oh well, it still tastes like cake and we all enjoyed it. Happy Birthday JeAnn!
