Description
For my fourth cake in three years found “Bad Hair Day” by Lim Heng Swee. I like designs that are extremely simple, one color and childlike. I found several great round designs that fit that criteria but they involved lots of black for their base color. This was the one that didn’t. It’s my husband’s birthday so I let him choose which design.
I used Yellow cake because it’s one of my favorite flavors and the color will go well with the yellow design. Instead of making one cake I decided to make two small ones using two different pans. One six inch standard cake pan and the other a glass bowl for making a more domed shape. They both came out well.
As much as I am no good with fondant, I can’t help but keep trying to use it. I’m afraid of not being able to create a consistent solid surface with just frosting. But I try anyway. I managed to frost, cover and pat down the first cake with fondant pretty well. The second one came apart on the side but I improvised by making a long strip and wrapping it around and trying to blend the seams. I seriously need to look into chocolate modeling clay.
For the arms and hair comb I used left over fondant. When shaping the comb, I used a real comb to cut the tiny bristles by pushing it down into the fondant piece and carefully dragging out and then cutting of the excess. I was having so much fun doing it, I made four of them. I simply piped the sun rays with frosting after I color matched it to the fondant. And then made a small batch of black frosting to pipe the face and other arm.
All in all not too bad. Happy Birthday to Jason, my husband of ten years
