When I first head about this contest I was looking at the Bakerella blog on my lunch break. I immediately was excited and knew that i had to enter. So the only question was which one to choose... I looked over the designs many times and was pleasantly surprised and how many I liked. I had heard of Threadless but never been to the website. I narrowed my results down and decided to do Toast! I just love it, so cute, so funny! I couldn't wait to start the next weekend.
All and all it to me about a week to complete. Mostly split between 2 Sundays and any other time I could fit in. I started on any fondant work I could and then on the toasts. I made the Toasts bodies out of rice crispy treats and fondant. Then I made a template for their bathing suits and air brushed their tan lines. I made their legs and arms out of fondant and let them dry on cardboard forms so they would keep their shape. When i really started going on the cake I didn't even realize how many little details their was to everything. I had to let the girl dry so she could sit up and her one hand had to dry just so. Which proved to be very challenging. Putting the flip flops in between the guy toasts toes was an unexpected challenge too. As well as trying to make his one leg crossed in the air.
Making the cakes was the easy part. I decided to make a white cake and a chocolate cake, to please everyone. Since I new I was planning on using gram cracker crumbs as the sand I decided to make a honey cream cheese frosting to go with it.. I put it in between the layers too.
Eating was the best part. I took it to work with me because they always appreciate cake and I knew they would be good sports about me taking pictures of them eating! Everyone thought I was a little crazy but they had a lot of fun with it. Everyone loved the cake! The gram cracker crumbs on top were awesome. I had one piece to each flavor and even though I am a total chocolate person the honey cream cheese frosting and gram cracker went even better with the white cake!
This was more of a challenge then I expected but it was a lot of fun!
