Catcakes cake by Mary Burroughs

Description

This is my 2nd entry in the 2014 Threadcakes contest. As soon as I saw this design, I knew I wanted to make this for my birthday cake for two reasons: I love cats and I love cake. Overall this cake took around 17 hours to make and assemble.

To begin, I created a pattern for the cupcake wrapper ridges. Next I cut the ridge shapes out of fondant and matched them to my pattern. Next I baked and stacked the red velvet cake. Then I carved the cake into a cupcake shape. Next I crumb coated the cake and stuck the fondant ridges onto the cake. To finish I used my airbrush to add the red color to the fondant and added black highlights with an edible marker.

To begin on the cat cake, I baked and stacked chocolate cake. Then I carved the cat body and coated the cake with buttercream. Next I covered the cake with fondant and added fur detailing. Then I made rice krispy treats and formed the cat head shape. Next I added fondant detailing to the head and attached it to the body. To finish the cake I made sprinkles out of fondant using my clay extruder and attached them to the cake. Then I added the “frosting” to the top of the cupcake and to the top of the cat.

I had a lot of fun making this cake and it was one of my better birthday cakes. Enjoy!
