Sound of nature cake by Mary Burroughs

Description

This will be my 10th entry since 2011 into the Threadcakes contest. So as soon as I heard there was going to be another contest this year, I rushed to the Threadless gallery to select my cake design. As soon as I saw the Sound of Nature design in the Threadless gallery, I knew I had to make it into a cake. I really liked that I could make lots of sugar flowers since I don’t get to make them that often. (Now I remember why...) Overall this cake took well over 25 hours to make.

Prior to baking the cake I made all of the flowers and leaves since some of the flowers take a few days to dry. The lilies, daisies, daffodils, and leaves are made out of gumpaste. The lilies and leaves contain a small amount of wire to help shape and form the final flowers and leaves. I used petal dust to add a little bit of color to the daisies, lilies, and leaves. For the roses, I decided to use edible wafer paper. I find that wafer paper makes a little more realistic roses. I colored the wafer paper with yellow food coloring prior to cutting out all of the petals. I used various sizes of circle cutters to cut out the petals. I attached the petals one by one onto a pre-made rose center. Overall I think I cut out around 200 petals.

Once I had all of the flowers completed, I baked the red (green) velvet cake. The cake ended up being green because the store was completely out of red food coloring. It works though since this is a nature themed cake. Once the cake was cooled I filled the cake with cream cheese frosting and coated the entire cake in buttercream frosting and popped it into the fridge to set up. Once the cake was set, I covered it in black fondant. Using a scale printing of the Threadless design, I free-hand painted the cake using Wilton white-white icing color. I then made all of the knobs, buttons, and other details out of fondant and attached them to the cake. I used the white-white icing color to add additional details. Once the cake was painted, I attached the flowers and leaves.

Overall I am really happy with how the cake turned out. My co-workers were also happy that they got to eat cake, so win-win.
