Beauty Immortal cake by Mary Burroughs

Description

This is my 3rd and final entry in the 2014 Threadcakes contest. As soon as I saw this design, I knew I had to make it. I decided to wait until Halloween and make it for my office Halloween dress up day. The flavor of cake is chocolate with salted buttercream frosting coated in chocolate ganache. It took me around 20 hours to make this cake.

To begin, I made the leaves, flowers and butterfly out of gumpaste. Next I made a mould for the jaw out of left-over fondant and tylose powder. I got the jaw from a plastic Halloween skull I purchased. I let everything set up for a few days before assembly.

The next step was baking and assembling the cake. I made my chocolate cake, salted caramel sauce and chocolate ganache one day. The next day I made buttercream frosting and added the salted caramel sauce. I then filled the chocolate cake layers with the salted caramel buttercream frosting and let the cake set up in the fridge. Next I carved the cake, using my plastic skull as a reference. Once the cake was carved, I coated the cake in chocolate ganache. Once the ganache was set, I covered the cake in fondant. Next I painted on the face details and finished off the cake with the gumpaste items.
