Description
This will be my sixth entry on threadcakes and I wanted to stay true to the design, so this one was going to be done as a "team". My sister and I were going to tackle this cake together, unfortunately she kept getting pulled away and wasn't able to help as much as we expected.
I started by baking 3 pound cakes in sheet cake pans. While they cooled we colored homemade marshmallow fondant I made green and brown (btw...I used my Kitchen Aid to mix the fondant for the most part- it's a LOT less messy that way!). I stenciled the letters out on a cake board and my sister cut them out so we could use them as stencil for cake carving and then as support for the individual letters that were standing.
Once the cakes were chilled enough, we carved each letter out and covered them in vanilla butter cream...this is were the team work ended unfortunately lol! I then covered all the letters in brown fondant, which was the most difficult part of the process. It was a struggle to get the fondant down into the little sections without making it look really bad...but overall I really liked the way it turned out. I also covered a cake board with green fondant for the background.
Once they were covered in their fondant, I used dowels to support TEAM standing up so they would be towering over poor "I" just like in the shirt. They looked pretty intimidating!
When that was done, I used sugar paste to create all the hats, balls, arms and other accessories that are laying around them. This was my first experience with sugar paste, thankfully it was a good one. I took a short dinner break while my pieces dried. Once dried, I painted them with food coloring, mixed with vodka (which WAS calling my name) and attached them to the cake. The arms I just stuck into the letters so that it would look like they were actually attached and not glued on.
Overall, I was very happy with the way that it turned out. If I didn't have to submit eating pictures I would have saved it for at least another day so that I could show it off...but rules are rules ;) That was a VERY sweet piece of cake though! Will go great with coffee tomorrow morning. My nine year old said it was too sweet for her (which I honestly didn't think was ever possible) but my 11 year old loved it.
Thanks for looking!!!
