If you're interested in time travel, meet me last Thursday. cake by Brandy Wilson

Description

I am a HUGE fan of the show Dr. Who, so I've been searching for an excuse to build a TARDIS (Time and Relative Dimension(s) in Space) in cake form. I was very happy when I found this t-shirt, so thank you threadless!!

For those not familiar with the TARDIS, I'll explain in a little bit. First let me go through the cake process. Yesterday, I started with a homemade banana cake for three reasons, first because it's just as dense as banana bread, second it's just as yummy and the third is because the current Doctor (owner of the TARDIS) loves bananas. I made two sheet cakes. While those cooled, I made homemade marshmallow fondant..and found a great shortcut! I added the food-coloring in the melted marshmallow, making the color really dark so it would fade to the appropriate amount when I added the powdered sugar. Personally, I think this particular fondant is very hard to color so this way made it so much easier. Once the fondant was done, I placed everything in the fridge to cool overnight.

Today, I made the butter cream (substituting the shortening with bananas..tip I got from another contestant) and carved the cakes. My daughter has been dying to help with one of my entries so I let her do the butter cream on the t-shirt cake while I cut and stacked the cakes for the TARDIS cake. She did a pretty good job for a 9 year old, I didn't have to fix much. I then covered the t-shirt cake with the purple fondant and moved on to the TARDIS. I had to insert three dowels to help support it. I decided I wanted to add more blue to the fondant that I had, so I grabbed what I thought was my blue food coloring added a bunch and started mixing..only to realize that my purple food coloring with the blue lid on it! Thankfully, using enough blue corrected the color mistake. I covered it all in butter cream and then in the blue fondant. Covering a tall rectangle is definitely a skill that I'm going to need practice with lol!

Once the TARDIS was covered, I used the same blue fondant to highlight the doors, side panels and signage on top. I used royal icing to pipe "POLICE BOX", it only took me three tries to get it to fit lol! I also used royal icing to pipe the letters on the t-shirt. As you can see, piping is not my strong point...my hands always seem to start shaking as soon as I pick up the bag of icing :)

When it was all done, I took a piece of cake and enjoyed the banana explosion in my mouth!

Now...for those who are interested, the TARDIS is the most magnificent machine in the universe that the Time Lord, called "The Doctor"(he is an alien,) uses to travel through space and time. It's a show on BBC that first aired back in 1963. I was introduced to it last year and have completely fallen in love with the characters, plots and overall quality of the show. If you live in Britain, I know you already know about it :) If you live here in America..the SciFi Channel plays it occasionally (and is always a season behind), so if you ever get a chance to watch, I strongly recommend that you do!

Thanks for looking and reading!!!!!!!!!!!!
