Rainforests cake by Chantal Merrill

Description

This is my fourth entry in the Threadcakes 2009 competition. I decided to teach myself how to "paint" on fondant.

The inside of this cake was a sprinkly rainbow mix to match the rainbow of colors on the outside (I have a thing for matching mixes to the decorations). I covered it in Vanilla frosting, and then let that sit before rolling out and applying a thin layer of white fondant to the cake. I smoothed out the fondant and then, using FOOD SAFE paintbrushes and gel food coloring, I hand painted the design on the surface of the cake. Out of the entire baking time, the painting took the longest, probably close to two hours itself. And for some reason, I decided to start this cake at around 9 PM, so I was up pretty late finishing it..It was pretty cool to cut it open and see the sprinkle colors on the inside to match the outside..and then we had breakfast and dessert for the next day!
